Learn Spanish Verbs

In general, the Spanish language is very ordered. Simply by learning some basics about Spanish grammar, you can usually dissect any sentence and understand why it has been constructed in the way that it has. Once you have those concepts down, you can create other sentences using the same rules.

For the purposes of this article, I am not going to go into the details of  Spanish verb conjugation. Rather, I want to talk about those elements of Spanish grammar that are necessary to have a good understanding of how the Spanish language works. There are four categories of those elements that I have listed below:

Word types – Conjunctions, adverbs, using prepositions, etc.

Verb formations – Different tenses.

Sentence formation – Fitting different words together in a sentence.

Gender – Forming masculine and feminine nouns and adjectives, as well as verb gender.

The above elements are the foundations of the Spanish language.

If you are serious about learning Spanish, you will definitely need a  Spanish verb conjugation book to teach you how Spanish verbs are formed.

Such a book will not only help you learn how different verbs should be formed in different tenses, but it will also help you learn which verbs fall into different formation categories.  For example, you will be able to tell immediately if a verb you just learned is regular or irregular.

You will find that a verb conjugation book will become the one resource you are constantly using.  It’s not as easy as just learning a new verb in Spanish.  You’ll need to know how to form it in different tenses if you intend to use it in conversation.

Although you may be able to guess how a verb should be formed by looking at its spelling, you can’t really be sure unless you are able to refer to a verb conjugation book.

You may think that after you’ve become proficient in Spanish that you’ll be able to do without your verb conjugation book, but it’s probable that even then you’ll need to refer to it from time to time. Native Spanish speaking people still have to use them on occasion!  It’s not as simple as you would think to learn Spanish verbs.

Remember, there are thousands of different verbs that can each be formed in a variety of ways, making it virtually impossible to know and memorize how each verb should be formed and used in a specific situation.

If you’re just beginning to learn Spanish verbs, a good rule of thumb is to concentrate only on the most commonly used verbs. Consider your daily life and think about what verbs you will likely use the most.  If you are going on a trip to a Spanish-speaking country, try to imagine which verbs you’ll use most while there.

Your list of verbs will add up quickly and before you know it, you will probably have a list of several hundred everyday verbs. The next step is to learn which ones are regular and irregular using your verb conjugation book.

When purchasing a Spanish verb conjugation book, check to make sure that it includes everything you need to know. Basically, it should have a thorough list of all the tenses you could possibly need to use when speaking Spanish.  This really is key to making sure that you have as easy a time as possible while learning Spanish verbs.

Rocket Spanish offers some good Spanish verb learning tools that can really give you a leg up when starting out learning Spanish verbs.
